Bernie Sanders headed to Tacoma for event Monday

Story has been updated.

Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders is planning an appearance Monday in Tacoma.

According to an announcement on Sanders’ campaign website, a free event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Tacoma Dome, 2727 East D St. The Vermont senator will attend the rally with U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with musical act Portugal. The Man taking the stage just after 6 p.m. and the speakers’ portion starting at 7 p.m.

The event is his first Washington state appearance in 2020.

Those wishing to attend can RSVP at https://bit.ly/37mULB1 and seating is first come, first served.

Sanders’ popularity in Tacoma is reflected in Federal Election Commission filings that showed Tacoma ZIP codes donated the most to him among the Democratic contenders as of Dec. 31: $97,284 in 2019.

Sanders won the 2016 Washington state caucuses. Washington’s 2020 primary is March 10.

Monday’s appearance comes on the heels of Sanders’ victory earlier this week in the New Hampshire primary.

Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg narrowly leads Sanders in delegates in the Democratic primary race and is visiting Seattle for a fundraising event on Saturday.

The last presidential candidate to appear at the Tacoma Dome was then-U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts in 2004 with a rally held in its parking lot.
